Considering that they've just animated W+Ks press ad, this is impossibly lame

Which came first - the banner or the print... from what we're told, they came at the same time. So to say that it's "just animated" shows a bias against an integrated idea working in multiple mediums.
Some of use have of course never seen the press ad, and even if it were run locally would likely not see it given the kinds of media we consume.
Hindsight and perspective can make things seem a lot simpler than they perhaps were on concept development.
Just a bit of the devil's advocacy...
